Interface Design

I really like the idea of a minimalist, object-based design interface that allows the stories and actions of individuals come through and shine. I’m taking inspiration from two online projects: Hey Stranger, What’s On Your Phone, a people-based project that explores what each individual is doing on their phone at one time, and Soldier Brother, an object-based project that explores the memories and meanings attached to certain objects.

My project will combine these two concepts to explore the actions of individuals through objects associated with their trade/industry; however, my project will be hand-drawn, further reinforcing this hand-made, human agency focus that is pivotal to the project’s aim of exploring the ingenuity and creativity of some individuals in trying to remain relevant in their jobs.

Each object – the painting, desktop screen, lamp, plate of food, desk, books, shoe, and chair – will be an interactive link that turns to bold when hovered, sending viewers to the page associated with that industry, featuring a quote or interview with someone from that industry explaining the measures they went to.

  • Painting = art industry
  • Desktop = IT
  • Lamp = electrician?
  • Plate = culinary industry (if this doesn’t breach our ‘no food-related topic’ ban
  • Desk = carpentry
  • Books = library/teaching
  • Shoe = fashion
  • Chair = design/engineering?

A universal navigation bar will be present at the bottom of each page to allow viewers to return to the homepage desk (from which all stories can be accessed), as well as to links for sharing, contributing one’s own story, and for further information about the project.

Quote marks will also be hand-drawn and placed on either end of the individual’s quote.
